karl_mullenKarl Mullen is an artist-composer-singer-songwriter and teacher. He was born in Derby, England in 1954 and was raised in Dublin, Ireland with five sisters and two brothers. He was expelled from school at 14 and began working in an Electrical Factory and bagging groceries. He lived in London and Paris before coming to the United States.

Mr. Mullen is a self-taught artist who has developed his own methods and approach to art and art making. For over twenty years he has been creating, performing, and exhibiting his art across the United States, Canada, Ireland, and Europe and in his adopted home of Pittsburgh. His performances at key events and as part of the peace and justice community have brought him recognition in 2002 and 2003 as one of the Top 50 Cultural Forces in Pittsburgh.

He has recorded nine solo and group CDs and records. He has also created and performed sound and music for theater productions including Bricolage Theater, Quantum Theater, and the Frick Art & Historical Center Visiting Artist Series. He has received many awards for his work in the arts including. Pittsburgh Post Gazette Innovators Without for 2002; WYEP radio’s Top 10 Local Artists of 2002, the 2001 Harry Schwalb Excellence In Arts Award; and the 1990 Buncher Award for Painting, Carnegie Museum Associated Artists exhibit. His song, Whiskey From the Field, received a 1995 Grammy nomination.
